It is a day to celebrate when you finally are able to enjoy your straight, beautiful smile after having braces. Although the braces period of treatment may be over, to keep those teeth aligned you must care for your smile with teeth retention. Regardless of the type of braces you had, you will need to wear a retainer to keep those teeth aligned and in place. As part of our orthodontic treatments, our experienced orthodontist Dr. Patel offers both fixed and removable retainers to help you maintain that beautiful smile.
Wearing Retainers after Braces
It is imperative that retainers are used after having braces to keep teeth from shifting out of place. In theory, retainers should be used for the rest of your life to maintain your straight, aligned teeth. A retainer will give your teeth enough support to prevent movement or shifting that could undo the repositioning that happened while the braces were worn.
Removable and Fixed Retainers
There are two main types of retainers available for the retention portion of your orthodontic treatment: removable and fixed. Both can help you maintain your aligned straight teeth, but each also has pros and cons.
- Removable retainers
Removable retainers are worn for a portion of every day, usually at night. The pros are that you can have the freedom of no retainer for most of the day and can easily keep up your oral hygiene routine. The biggest cons are that removable retainers can become lost, forgotten or damaged.
- Fixed retainers
Fixed or permanent retainers are placed in the mouth and keep your teeth in place 24/7. The biggest pro for fixed is that they tend to offer more sustained results and you don't have to worry about putting them in or losing them. As a con, it can be more difficult to floss and keep plague at bay.
